DAY 4 - Shira Camp 3,850m -10-11 hours / 17km
This morning we begin our first full day trekking, where we will gain over 1200m in height. It’s a long and tough day, but it’s a great way to kick start the process of acclimatisation. We first ascend out of the rainforest zone. Within 1-2 hours we will notice a big change in our surroundings as we enter the Moorland zone, characterised with shrub like trees and unique flora. After a number of breaks we start the moderate but sustained ascent up onto the Shira Plateau, ascending along what the locals refer to as ‘the Elephants Spine’, a broad ridge that offers incredible views to the plains below Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching the Shira Plateau we stop for a full cooked lunch before continuing onwards towards our camp for the night. A slow and steady ascent allows for our bodies to acclimatise to the higher altitude as we cross Kilimanjaro's Shira plateau. The terrain and views on the Shira Plateau are again markedly different as we have now ascended into the High Alpine Desert zone. Today is a tough day, but our local crew will have camp ready, and great food cooked for us, shortly after we arrive. Tonight we will sleep at Shira Camp, with great views of the imposing southern face of Kilimanjaro above and the Shira Plateau below.
