Pre-trip Preparation

how fit do I need to be for this trek?

Summiting Stok Kangri, the highest Indian Himayalan peak we can tackle, is a tough challenge, at altitude, but one that is achievable with the correct training. It requires a good level of strength, stamina and determination. Although the trek does not require you to have any winter mountaineering experience, be prepared for some long trekking days, especially on summit night. Your training should incorporate aerobic (endurance building), anaerobic (strength building) exercises and some good long walks!

are there any pre-challenge training days / weekends / briefings?

Yes! We have a number of pre-challenge Training Days in London and the North and South Downs, and Weekends in the Peak District, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons spread across the year, from early Spring until September, so there should be a weekend to suit you. There are also night training walks to replicate the summit trek on your challenge. 


Our training weekends are the best way to prepare yourself physically and mentally prior to tackling one of our Challenges, and they are a great way to meet other trekkers, the Action Challenge team and our fully qualified Mountain Leaders. They're also a brilliant excuse to also test out your kit and equipment, against the elements!


do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa - Yes British Passport holders do require a visa to enter India, which can be purchased from the Indian embassy in London or you can now submit an application online.


Insurance - Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs and trekking over 6000m. Your itinerary includes internal Indian flights that will be dependent on weather and we strongly recommend adding “missed flight connection” cover to your policy. We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible.


Vaccinations – Whilst the risk of contracting malaria on your climb is very low, Northern India and Delhi are considered a risk of malaria. Therefore, you will need to take anti-malarial tablets, to ensure that you are covered for times when you are at lower altitudes. Please seek medical advice on the anti-malarial options you have. Please also make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / travel clinic. 

Life on the Trek

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.


We guarantee to you that the maximum group size is 15 participants.


Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.


You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!


We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you with your descent and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what is the weather like while trekking?

Travelling in July through to end of August is a great time to take on this challenge. The weather is warm, dry and stable during these months, so temperatures can reach 30C in the lower valleys. As you gain altitude the temperature does drop, especially at night. In contrast, Delhi weather will be hot and fairly humid with chances of rain. 

It is wise to be prepared for all types of weather, bringing a suitable down jacket, good quality gloves and especially a warm sleeping bag (four season is essential). 

Mountainous weather is always unpredictable and can change very quickly. To ensure that you embrace this as part of the experience, ensure that you are ready for wind, rain, sun and snow!

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - We are provided with three varied and nutritious meals a day, and an unlimited supply of fully purified and treated water a day whilst trekking. Breakfast will be at the accommodation, lunch will be en route and dinner will always be in a good local restaurant or at the camp.


Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.


Accommodation - This will be allocated on a twin sharing basis. In Delhi and Leh, we will stay in comfortable hotels. On the trek, our accommodation will be at a campsite in well-equipped 2-person tents. Toilets provided at the campsite are 'long-drop' style.  


Single supplement - We can accommodate single rooms in the majority of the accommodation on the challenge, including on the trek itself in your own tent. 

Flights & Extending Your Stay

can I book my own flights?

Yes, this becomes our land only package and reduces your final balance or minimum sponsorship balance - please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights.


You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting hotel on day 2 of your challenge and Action Challenge will require details of your travel arrangements before departure.


Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

can I extend my trip or amend my return flight home?

Yes – why not stay on and explore more of what India has to offer, we have a range of extrensions to Agra, Jaipur and Taj Mahal as well as to South India beaches. We can request with the airline to change your return date. Places are limited and all arrangements are subject to availability.

Funding & Fundraising

how can I fund this challenge?

You can choose to fully fund the challenge yourself, fundraise for a charity of your choice (from which approximately 50% of the sponsorship will cover your trip cost), or opt to do a mixture of both! For all three funding options, an online registration deposit is required to secure your place.


We have worked with over 200 UK charities and welcome partnerships with new ones all the time! As long as they are a registered UK or Irish charity and agree to you doing so, we are more than happy for you to fundraise for any charity close to your heart.

Before you embark on your challenge, it is essential that we receive your passport, travel insurance, next of kin, medical details and dietary requirements (if applicable). If you have any medical conditions to declare or are over the age of 65, you will be required to complete a medical declaration form, signed and stamped by your GP. If you don’t have all this information to hand, you can still register your place today, and then re-log into the form before you depart by using your email address and the password you create upon registration.
