trek Sahara Desert
for St Andrew's Hospice

We assemble for our flight to southern Morocco. We arrive in the city of Ouarzazate – an ancient staging town situated in the heart of the Draa Valley, whose name is derived from the Arabic meaning “the door of the desert”. Here we retire to our hotel and prepare ourselves for the challenge ahead.

Dunes of Ras Nkhal - 3 hrs trekking

By bus we set off towards the Anti- Atlas Mountains through Zagora, where the camel trains historically set off for Timbuktu and continue onto Ouled Driss. Just outside the village, we load our camels and start our trek to our first campsite set amongst the dunes of Rad Nkhal. Tonight we enjoy our first traditional Moroccan dinner by a camp fire under African skies.

Ait Ounir Dunes - 7-8 hrs trekking

We’ll make the most of the morning cooler climes as we have a long walk ahead. Moving at the pace of our cam-els we will climb the first dunes of Ait Ouimir and walk through dried up river beds before a picnic lunch in the shade. We then continue on to our camp for a well deserved mint tea before dinner.

Bougerm / Tel Attin Wells - 6 hrs trekking

After breakfast we head north across the dried river beds towards Djbel Bani to find a suitable shady spot for lunch, avoiding the midday heat. There is more sand than yesterday and we pass many of the beautiful and desert savaged Tamarisk trees. We continue to Erg Smar and Bougerm close to the wells of Tel Attin where we set up our camp for the night. Our campsite is surrounded by huge dunes that we’ll have plenty of time to climb to watch the sun go down before supper.

Djebel Bani - 6-8 hrs trekking

Another big day today as the terrain changes and we walk over stone covered, rolling hills and exposed scrubland before finding shade for our picnic lunch. Another two hours trekking will bring us into camp next to a series of impressive dunes. Tonight is our last night in camp so there will be a celebratory feast where our local team play traditional enchanting and mesmerizing Moroccan music by the campfire.

Ouled Driss - 3-4 hrs trekking

For our last day of trekking we make our way East through beautiful rolling dunes and eventually complete our trek by finishing where we started on day 2. After a welcome cold drink and a picnic lunch we transfer all the way back to Ouarzazate just in time for a shower and our evening meal.

This morning we transfer by bus over the Atlas to Marrakech. We have the opportunity to spend some time in one of Morocco’s most exciting cities and then mark our achievements with an evening of celebration, long into the night!
