trek Inca Trail for Bradford Hospice

pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this trek?

Trekking along the Inca Trail is a moderate challenge, but it’s difficulty is heightened by the altitude. Nevertheless, it is very achievable with the correct training, and the slow pace set along the trail. The terrain is undulating and there will be some long up and down hill stretches. We will trek in and out of gorges and at times some scrambling will be involved. It requires a reasonable level of strength, stamina and determination. Your training should incorporate aerobic (endurance building), anaerobic (strength building) exercises and some good long walks!

are there any pre-challenge training days / weekends / briefings?

Yes, a challenge briefing will be provided approximately three months before you depart.

We have a number of pre-challenge Training Days in London and the North and South Downs, and Weekends in the Peak District, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons spread across the year, from early Spring until September, so there should be a weekend to suit you.

Our training weekends are the best way to prepare yourself physically and mentally prior to tackling one of our Challenges, and they are a great way to meet other trekkers, the Action Challenge team and our fully qualified Mountain Leaders. They're also a brilliant excuse to also test out your kit and equipment, against the elements!

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa - British Nationals do not require a visa to enter Peru. You will be issued a tourist visa upon arrival. You will need at least 6 months validation on your passport.

Passport information is needed to secure the Inca Trail permit in advance. Marie Curie will require the following approximately six to eight months before departure.

- All names, ages and passports should be submitted to Marie Curie at the pre agreed date before departure. Permits are sold on a first come first serve basis and a limited amount of permits are available each day for hikers in an effort to preserve the trail.

- The passenger details on the permit must exactly match the passenger‟s passport or entry is refused.

- We require the following information for the purchase of an Inca Trail Permit.

1. Full name (exactly as it appears on the passport)

2. Date of Birth

3. Nationality

4. Passport Number

5. Date of Passport Expiry - Must be valid for the date of travel.

Any attempts at modifications result in a loss of the permit. If you replace your passport after submitting the above details please retain your old passport and bring it with you on the event as your permit will be booked against it. If you lose your passport before departure please ensure you obtain a copy of the police report to bring with you on the event.

Insurance - Each participant must take out a valid travel insurance policy that adequately covers for all aspects of the trip, including helicopter rescue for mountain areas and medical repatriation that can be authorised on the advice of the Action Challenge tour leader. Action Challenge works regularly with Campbell Irvine as a specialist travel insurance provider. All questions regarding the cover, costs and purchase of the insurance can be made directly with Campbell Irvine. You can call them direct on +44 (0)207 938 1734, email or apply online.

You will need to quote “Action Challenge” and the name of your event. Please inform your charity once you have purchased the insurance and fax/email through a copy of the cover note to them with your insurance provider, policy number and 24hr insurance response emergency number. Travel insurance can be obtained elsewhere, but a copy of the policy must be given to the charity one month prior to departure. Please be aware that most high-street policies will not provide sufficient cover for a challenge event and we strongly recommend showing a copy of the itinerary to your insurer before you purchase your policy to ensure you are sufficiently covered.

Vaccinations – No specific vaccinations are required for Peru, however, please make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / travel clinic. Advised vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Diptheria and Rabies

life on the trek

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what is the weather like while trekking?

May through to October are the best times to trek in the Andes as the conditions are fairly dry and the weather is generally sunny.

Days will be warm and pleasant with temperatures reaching up to 21º. As the sun sets the temperature can drop dramatically to 3-6º so expect cold nights while camping.

Mountainous weather is always unpredictable and can change very quickly. To ensure that you embrace this as part of the experience, make sure that you are ready for wind, rain, and sunshine!

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - We will have an unlimited supply of fully purified and treated water, and three varied and nutritious meals a day. Breakfast will be at the accommodation/campsite and will typically consist of porridge, toast and eggs. Lunch and dinner will be en-route at a prearranged restaurant or campsite and will be a variety of rice, pasta, vegetables and a selection of meat and fish.

Much of the time in Cusco is free for you to seek out the many eateries, with a great choice of local and international flavours available. Alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase at the hotel and all bar tabs should be settled on an individual basis.

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation- You will be staying in tents on the trek and comfortable hotels, all on a twin/triple sharing basis. If you want to share with anyone in particular please let Marie Curie know in good time. Single supplements are also an option and are subject to availability. All accommodation is on a twin/triple-share, single-sex basis and we will pair you with someone of a similar age, where possible.

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places.

flights and extending your stay

can I book my own flights?

Yes, this becomes our land only package and reduces your final balance or minimum sponsorship balance - please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights.

You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting hotel on day 2 of your challenge and Action Challenge will require details of your travel arrangements before departure.

Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

can I extend my trip or amend my return flight home?

We offer three different extension packages that you can book onto post challenge:

• 3 Day Rainforest Adventure.
• 3 Day Adrenaline Adventure to Huacachina Oasis.
