trek Malawi for REALL

Depart UK

We arrive in Blantyre where we are met by our guides and we transfer to our hotel accommodation in town. This afternoon we visit the project where we will be working for the next 3 days before our welcome dinner tonight and briefing by our guides and support team.

Community Project Work

For the next three days we transfer each day to the local REALL project that helps slum dwellers and communities gain access to basic amenities such as water, sanitation and even land, and helps them build their own homes. Each day we will be working with our local team on the project in a number of different ways which will include building work on houses. There will be a chance in the afternoon to meet with the local staff and understand much better the needs of the homeless in Malawi. We return to our Blantyre hotel each day for dinner.

Mulanje - 7 hrs trekking

After breakfast we transfer 1.5hrs south east of Blantyre to the Mulanje mountains where we start our trek. The climb into the mountains is hot and tiring but the higher we go the better the views and suddenly as we reach the top of the treeline we start to see some of the incredible mountain views of the Mulanje Massif. This is Malawi’s very own “Little Switzerland” and as we finally arrive at our Chambe Forrest Lodge for the night we can relax with supper cooked by our team as we watch the sun set to the west.

Thuchila Valley - 7 hrs trekking

Our goal is the Chisepo basecamp which is reached along the beautiful and shaded Skyline path and the Chambe Basin. We pass the source of the Likhubula River and arrive at our overnight forest lodge by mid afternoon, having enjoyed a picnic lunch en-route. This is a good long trek which has great viewpoints especially of the Thuchila Valley. Once at the Chisepo Forest Hut we relax and enjoy the incredible surroundings before an early night as we prepare for the summit climb tomorrow.

Mt Sapitwa, 3002m - 9 hours trekking

After an early breakfast we climb Sapitwa 3002m summiting the highest point in Southern tropical Africa by mid-morning. On a clear day views extend to the Zomba Plateau and Lake Chilwa to the North and North West. We return to our hut for a hefty brunch and this afternoon we continue trekking on undulating terrain to the Thuchila plateau where we watch sunset at Elephant Head viewpoint before settling in to Lichenya forest lodge.

Blantyre - 6 hours trekking

This morning we trek out of the mountains descending the high scenery then down through the forest along the Likulezi Path and eventually we arrive at the trailhead at Tinyade Estate where lunch and our transport will be waiting to take us back to Blantyre. We make our way to our hotel in Blantyre and this evening we celebrate the end of an incredible challenge well into the night.
