trek Cuba for NICFC

Arrive Cuba

We depart from Dublin Airport in the early morning, arriving into Havana late afternoon local time. We transfer to our Havana hotel where we have a welcome meal and meet our team of guides who will be with us for the coming days.

Santa Clara

This morning we have a tour of this amazing city that seems like being brought back in a timewarp to the 50’s and 60’s. We visit the important sites of Old Havana, with its street markets and music coming out of bars and clubs, and the important Plaza de Armas. For the afternoon we make our way to our hotel on the shores of Habanilla Lake where we have dinner and relax.

Casa de la Gallega

The challenge begins with a boat crossing of Lake Hanabanilla to Casa de la Gallega surrounded by coffee estates and abounding in natural spectacular beauty with scenic views along unspoilt trails. Our lunch of Chicken de la Gallega is at a local house and in the afternoon the path takes us to the highlight today: the stunning 50 metres waterfalls of ‘El Salto del Rocio’. After a refreshing swim in the calm and crystalline waters, we make our way to Casa de la Gallega camp in time for a great dinner.

La Hacienda Codina

Our trek today is mostly uphill through the magnificent Escambray Mountains through incredible forests of Caribbean pine and eucalyptus that are full of historical and cultural landmarks. This was the site of resistance during and after the revolution. After lunch, we cross the creek at the foot of El Sirio’s land and climb again to La Codina for dinner and overnight in camp.

La Batata & Parque Caburni

After breakfast we leave on a tough climb along the Salto de Caburni to take us to La Battata, an incredible cave filled with crystalline waters that highlight the ecological value of the reserve. After a late lunch at ‘La Represa’ we transfer back to our base hotel.

Vega Grande

Today is a much tougher day as we trek to the Vega Grande Trail waterfall, the natural monument and symbol of Escambray Trinitario. From here it is trekking on towards a spectacular 150m waterfall. This sight is enough to revive even the most exhausted trekker! With steep terrain, a variety of flora and fauna as well as a great abundance of birds and 2 great waterfalls this makes for a fantastic day. Our trek ends at ‘Comunidad 28 Septiembre’, where our vehicles will be waiting to take us back to our hotel.

Parque el Cubano

Our last trekking day starts with a transfer to a superb vistas point over the Escambray Mountains from here we are trekking through the great Parque El Cubano and we stop at more of the incredible waterfalls to swim in the cool waters. The route continues on the path to ‘Pez Cato’ farm where we have lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we continue to the roadhead and meet our transfer vehicles that will whisk us back to our hotel.

Trinidad & Havana

Today we have the morning free to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trinidad, with its almost perfectly preserved colonial houses and town centre. If a beach or pool sounds more appealing then we can relax and take in some of the atmosphere of one of the most incredible of Caribbean islands. This afternoon we transfer to bustling Havana. Tonight we have a great celebratory dinner and party Cuban style to mark the end of an incredible challenge.

Depart Cuba

After breakfast we have some free time before our flight home. Havana is ours to enjoy – we can choose from visiting the Museum of the Revolution, sampling the local art on the Paseo de Marti or taking a stroll down the Malecon. We then transfer to the airport in time for our overnight flight home.
