Mount Toubkal Winter

pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this trek?

The undulating nature of the route added to the effect of altitude on the body has meant that this trek has been classed as a moderate challenge. Nevertheless, it is very achievable with the correct training, which should incorporate aerobic and anaerobic exercises including some long walks.

are there any pre-challenge training days / weekends / briefings?

Yes! We have a number of pre-challenge Training Days in London and the North and South Downs, and Weekends in the Peak District, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons spread across the year, from early Spring until September, so there should be a weekend to suit you.

Our training weekends are the best way to prepare yourself physically and mentally prior to tackling one of our Challenges, and they are a great way to meet other trekkers, the Action Challenge team and our fully qualified Mountain Leaders. They're also a brilliant excuse to also test out your kit and equipment, against the elements!

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa British passport holders do not require a visa to enter Morocco. However you will not be able to exceed your stay in Morocco past 90 days.

Insurance - Each participant must take out an insurance policy that adequately covers for all aspects of the trip, including medical repatriation and trip curtailment.

Vaccinations - Please ensure that you are up-to-date on boosters and vaccinations. Information on vaccinations is forever changing so we ask that you seek advice from a Travel Clinic or Medical Professional. If you do need vaccinations, make sure you book an appointment with your doctor at least 8-10 weeks before your trip this allows time for the vaccinations to take effect.

life on the trek

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you with your descent and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what is the weather like while trekking?

Expect temperatures of 10 degrees or so during the day, dropping to close or below freezing at night, especially on days 3 & 4. Heavy snowfall, rain and storms can can occur at short notice at higher elevations, so pack & dress accordingly.

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - Breakfast will be at our accommodation whilst lunch will be en-route, either a packed-lunch or at a pre arranged restaurant. Our evening meal will either be at our accomodation or a good local restaurant. All meals will be provided apart from meals during free time. It is not advisable to drink the water straight from the tap in Morocco, please stick to bottled water. Whilst on trek, water for filling drinking containers will be available in the mornings.

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation - This will be a mixture of hotels and camping. Hotel accommodation is on a twin/triple share basis. If there is someone in particular who you would like to share with, please let the team know.

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room/tent on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places.
