cycle Nairobi - Kilimanjaro

Depart London

Today we meet our group and Action Challenge staff at the airport in London, before checking in together and boarding our flight to Nairobi.

We arrive in Nairobi and transfer directly to Nairobi National Park, where we enjoy a ½ day safari prior to a bike fitting and briefing on the challenge ahead. This evening we have a welcome meal, before a good night’s sleep camping under the African skies in preparation for the next five days of cycling.

Depart Thika - 59 km

After an early breakfast we cycle directly out of our camp before the heat and the hectic traffic kicks in. Most of this morning will be relatively easy cycling on fairly flat dirt and tarmac roads. This afternoon we have a steep descent into our Sianthan tented camp where a cup of tea or an ice cold beer will be waiting for us. Tonight our camp team will prepare a delicious meal for us with plenty of carbs and protein to charge us up for tomorrow’s ride.

Nziu - 78 km

Today we cycle along more traditional African dirt roads, which we get used to very quickly. Our route takes us off the beaten track and deep into countryside rarely seen by visitors to Kenya. We pass through small villages catching a glimpse of rural Kenyan life, farmers and their animals in the fields and sometimes even a sighting of game. The afternoon finishes with relatively flatter roads before arriving at Nziu Camp in mid afternoon.

Emali - 77 km

Today marks our halfway point through the challenge. We start cycling through the semi arid countryside and by lunchtime we cross the main Mombasa to Nairobi highway at the town of Emali. We have a further 45km on good roads recently tarred by the Chinese before arriving at our wild camp this evening.

Rongai - 93 km

After a good breakfast we leave early for one of the hardest days of our challenge, starting with a fast, relatively flat cycle. We make our way over the Tanzanian border crossing at Oloitokitoki and cycle on through the afternoon, climbing up the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to our camp at Kamwanga.

Kilimanjaro - 106 km

Our last cycling day is almost entirely downhill. Starting from our camp at Kamwanga in the north of Kilimanjaro, we head south skirting the western base of this magnificent mountain. There should be great photo opportunities with the sun rising behind Kilimanjaro and its summit towering above the treetops. Once we have reached the southern slopes we head away from the mountain and make our way to the Weru Weru River Lodge where we celebrate our fantastic cycling adventure with a dinner and party

Depart Tanzania

Today there will be a free day to shop or soak up the sun and unwind before transferring to the airport for our return flight to London.
