Arrive in Kochi

We arrive in Kochi and make our way to our hotel in Fort Cochin. We have a bike fitting this evening and get together tonight for a welcome meal and a briefing on the challenge ahead.

Meals: Dinner

Birds Lagoon

After breakfast, we start our cycle making the most of the early morning coolness heading east, along the quiet roads that are mostly level throughout the morning. We pass through scenic countryside of temples, spice gardens, paddy fields and rubber plantations. Our comfortable accommodation on the Thattekkad river in the late afternoon is a welcome sight and here we have time to relax in a magnificent jungle setting. If we are lucky at dust elephants may join us as they bath and cool themselves on the far bank of the river.

Munnar - 60 km

Today, we set off cycling along the Periyar river and through the forests of Neriyamanagalam, where reed is extracted for manufacture of traditional household items like baskets and mats. As the scenery slowly changes, we glimpse rubber, pepper and cardamom estates and finally tea plantations. The ride today is a shock to the system as the climbing starts early. We stop at Adimali for lunch and this afternoon at the right point we end the ride and make the rest of the way in our support vehicle to the hill station of Munnar – a hill town famed for its vast swathes of tea plantations. Munnar, once a favourite summer resort town of the British, is set amidst dramatic mountain scenery, craggy peaks, tall redwood trees, and some of the world’s highest tea plantations.

Periyar - 70 km

Today is a long distance challenge but also one of the most exciting! Almost 70km of our ride today is infact down hill, however the terrain is undulating and there are a couple of hard climbs to overcome. Passing through forests, tea gardens and spice plantations, we end our day with a good freewheel into our Periyar Hotel where we can either relax our legs by the pool after a good evening meal and drink at the bar. Periyar has one of the best wildlife reserves in India with large herds of Asiatic elephants, Indian Bison as well as tigers. For the ornithologists it has over 330 species of birds including the majestic Great Hornbill.

Kulamavu - 77 km

Today, we take the winding roads down to the edge of the Western Ghats at Kulamavu. This route consists of a perfect mountain cycling country with great scenic views of small spice growing hamlets dotting the landscape and undulating roads through tea estates and forests. We see the famous arch dam of Idukki on the way and we cross the beautiful Kulamavu dam just before reaching our destination: a resort set amidst the tea estates and a quiet retreat after a hard day of cycling.

Aleppey - 121 km

On our final day of cycling, we ride through the mountain passes to the plains, continuing through the rubber country of Palai to Alleppey - known as the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. Here, you will settle into a beautiful resort on the banks of the Alleppey lagoon. Tonight, we prepare ourselves for a fantastic celebratory meal and some serious partying on the southern Indian Ocean.
