Depart London

Today we meet our group and Action Challenge staff at the airport in London, before checking in together and boarding our flight to Myanmar.

Arrive Myanmar

Upon arrival into Yangon we have an internal flight to Heho. From here it's a scenic one-hour drive that leads to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway village to the enchanting Inle Lake. On arrival at the lake we take a private motorboat to head out to our hotel. We witness an incredible sunset before a great welcome meal at a famous local restaurant and return to our hotel for a well deserved rest.

Kalaw - 77 km

After breakfast, we return by boat to the shore where we start our ride to Kalaw. Along the way, stop at the wooden Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery which features beautiful carvings and a collection of Buddha images. The road has good climbs to the Nyaung Shwe Valley and then down, passing small towns and villages along the way. There is a stretch of flat road around the Heho plains, then an uphill ride to Aungban before we make our way to Kalaw. We have a packed lunch break on the way and end the day with a ride all the way to our hotel in Kalaw. Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

Meikhtila - 115 km

The scenery and climate will change today as we descend from the Shan hills and the former British hill station of Kalaw down and into the Ayerwaddy Valley with toddy palm tree lined roads. We cycle on these good fast flat roads for about 85km passing through pine forests and villages with both local and colonial-style houses. Lunch will be at a local restaurant on the way. Upon reaching Meikhtila, we check in to our hotel and, if we have the energy explore this small town on foot. The city is centred around a lake and is home to several well-known pagodas. Meikhtila was also the site of a famous battle during World War II. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Mt Popa - 121 km

For our longest and toughest challenge this morning we have a scenic ride from Meikhtilia for 121km of gradual rolling countryside all the way to Mt Popa. The local roads are peaceful with little traffic and we stop for lunch along the way. Approaching Mt. Popa at the end of this hard day in the saddle the road cruelly climbs its slopes before descending again to get to our great resort hotel.  After check in we can enjoy the spectacular views or go for a refreshing swim, before we get together again in the evening for supper.

Bagan - 58 km

For one of the many highlights of our challenge we have a great short cycle to one of the greatest historical cities of Myanmar, the city of 1000 temples, Bagan. We wake early this morning for breakfast with a view from Popa Mountain Resort’s deck. Our ride is only 58km today and it is virtually all downhill as we drop 500m on a good fast road through Burmese country roads dotted with small plantations and lined by palm trees. This Toddy palm plays an important role in Myanmar rural life, beyond creating juice and sugars for the people, it provides shade as well as materials for making household utensils, buildings and medicines. Today we will stop at a roadside toddy manufacturer and observe the process of creating the toddy juice. This afternoon we bike around the temple plains of Bagan to visit some of the main sites as well as hidden gems and local villages. This afternoon’s ride will include a sunset stop at one of the elevated temple platforms and this evening we have supper in a local restaurant.

Mandalay - 70 km

For our final cycling day we rise early and after a quick breakfast transfer 2hrs to the start point. Our bikes will be waiting for us ready to finish our Myanmar Cycle Challenge. The ride starts off with a good downhill before an easy 10km climb to the highest point of the day. These are the plains of the Ayerwaddy Valley and virtually the rest of our day is spend descending all the way to our hotel in downtown Mandalay. Tonight we celebrate the end of an incredible challenge.
