climb Mount Kenya

Nairobi - Nanyuki

We arrive early into Kenya and transfer 4 hours through the Central Highlands coffee plantations to our lodge by Mount Kenya National Park. After a good lunch we have time to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s challenge. This evening we have a welcome dinner and briefing with our guides.

Old Moses Camp - 9 km

After breakfast we transfer to Sirimon Park Gate and enter Mount Kenya National Park. We are surrounded by beautiful scenery as we trek through the Sirimon Valley, along the Old Moses Trail, en route to our camp. We pass through the Podo and bamboo rainforests which are rich with flora and fauna. From Old Moses Camp, the main summits of Batian, Nelion and Point Lenana are visible.

Liki North Camp - 12 km

Today we continue our ascent, heading towards the Ontulili River, following the contours along the northern slopes before gradually turning south. We trek over moorland with its heather, giant lobelia, groundsel, animal life and numerous species of birds. We cross the Liki River and crest the ridge above the spectacular Mackinder Valley to admire the view. From here we drop down into the valley and continue along its eastern side to Liki North Camp, where we overnight.

Shipton's Hut - 12 km

After a good breakfast we trek east to Shipton’s Hut and en route get views of Arthur’s Seat. This acts as an acclimatisation hike from where we can see the great valleys, glacier fields and tarns of Mount Kenya. Tonight we rest and sleep well in anticipation of our big day tomorrow.

Shipton's Hut - 10 km

We wake early for our big climb up to Point Lenana at 4,985 m. The ascent is mainly on rock, sand and snow but the view is definitely worth it! We watch the sunrise, take pictures and celebrate the feeling of being on top of the world! After a cool and possibly windy morning at the summit we return to Shipton’s Huts to rest and recover for our descent.

Mountain Rock Lodge - 10 km

Upon arrival at the park gate our vehicles transfer us back to Nanyuki, where we have a celebratory meal to mark the end of an incredible challenge and week together.
