Camino de Santiago Trek

PRE TRIP PREPARATION

how fit do I need to be for this trek?

With multiple days of trekking over undulating Spanish terrain, this is a fair challenge, that offers comfortable accomodation along the way. It is very achievable with the correct training, which should incorporate aerobic and anaerobic exercises including some long walks.

are there any pre-challenge training days / weekends / briefings?

Yes! We have a number of pre-challenge Training Days in London and the North and South Downs, and Weekends in the Peak District, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons spread across the year, from early Spring until September, so there should be a weekend to suit you.

Our training weekends are the best way to prepare yourself physically and mentally prior to tackling one of our Challenges, and they are a great way to meet other trekkers, the Action Challenge team and our Mountain Leaders. They're also a brilliant excuse to also test out your kit and equipment, against the elements!

FIND OUT MORE >>

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa British passport holders do not require a visa to enter Spain. However you will not be able to exceed your stay in Spain past 90 days.

Insurance - Each participant must take out an insurance policy that adequately covers for all aspects of the trip, including medical repatriation and trip curtailment.

Vaccinations - Please ensure that you are up-to-date on boosters and vaccinations. Information on vaccinations is forever changing so we ask that you seek advice from a Travel Clinic or Medical Professional. If you do need vaccinations, make sure you book an appointment with your doctor at least 8-10 weeks before your trip this allows time for the vaccinations to take effect.

LIFE ON THE TREK

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you with your descent and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what is the weather like while trekking?

Summer temperatures will see highs of 30°C but it will start to cool by late October. Galicia sees a lot of rainfall throughout the year, so expect warm weather, but also prepare for wet conditions & please pack appropriately.

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - Breakfast will be at our accommodation whilst lunch will be en-route, either a packed-lunch or at a pre arranged restaurant. Our evening meal will either be at our accomodation or a good local restaurant. All meals will be provided apart from meals during free time. You can drink the tap water in Spain, and there are many water fountains along the route where you can fill up a bottle.

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation - This will be a mixture of hotels and albergues - traditional communcal lodgings for pilgrims walking the way of St James . Hotel accommodation is on a twin/triple share basis. If there is someone in particular who you would like to share with, please let the team know.

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room on the challenge, this can be arranged for the hotels at the start & finish of the trek.

PAYMENT, FUNDRAISING & INCLUSIONS

how can I fund this challenge?

You can choose to fully fund the challenge yourself, fundraise for a charity of your choice (from which approximately 50% of the sponsorship will cover your trip cost), or opt to do a mixture of both! For all three funding options, an online registration deposit is required to secure your place.

We have worked with over 200 UK charities and welcome partnerships with new ones all the time! As long as they are a registered UK or Irish charity and agree to you doing so, we are more than happy for you to fundraise for any charity close to your heart.
