When will I find out the flight details?

You will receive via email from the Kilimanjaro Challenge team confirming your flight times, flight number, airline carrier and departure airport and terminal details one month prior to your trip. 

How do I get my plane tickets?

These will be handed to you by your Action Challenge rep on arrival at the airport when you meet prior to your departure. 

Are the flights direct?

All flights depart from London and will have a layover en route as there are no direct flights into Kilimanjaro airport, Tanzania.

Where do the flights depart from?

All flights depart from London - the departure airport and terminal will be confirmed one month prior to your departure.  

Is there a luggage limit?

Your luggage will be restricted to 2 bags - one large rucksack which will be checked in this should be a 100 litre rucksack or duffle bag without wheels that should not exceed 23kg due to flight restrictions. Your second piece of luggage should be your day sack (30 litre backpack) and should not exceed 10kg - and this is the bag you will carry onto the plane with you. We recommend that you wear your trekking boots on the plane in case there is a delay with any luggage making it to Tanzania.

There is a 13 - 15 kg luggage restriction whilst on the mountain - and there are bags available at the hotel for you to decant items not needed for the mountain (party outfits and hair dryers!) - and these will be stored securely whilst you are trekking.

I am extending my trip - when do I get my flight tickets?

You will be handed your electronic flight ticket from the Action Challenge leader whilst you are in Tanzania.

Can I book my own flights?

We do offer a land only package which means you would be required to arrange your own flights and transfers to make your own way to the hotel on day 2 of the challenge. Alternatively if you arrange your flights to land into Kilimanjaro at the same time or within ½ an hour of the main group arrival we could arrange provisions for you to be included in the group hotel transfer.   The group flight times can be provided to allow you to book suitable times and we would need confirmation of your own flight details prior to departure.  Our land only package reduces the cost by £580.00 and we would need confirmation in writing in order to take you off the group flights that are held on registration. The latest we can accept a land only request is 12 weeks prior to departure.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Yes - visas for Tanzania need to be issued before you leave the UK and you must have at least 6 months validity on your passport as well as 2 blank pages in your passport before you can apply for your visa.

When should I apply for the visa?

The Tanzanian visa will be valid for only 3 months from the date of issue - so we advise that you apply for the visa within 4 months of your departure date. We will send you a reminder email 4 months prior to your climb.

How can I apply for the visa?

You can either apply in person by visiting the Tanzania high commission in London (although you need to drop off and pick up during certain times), alternatively you can apply for your via by post.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the visa is £40. If you opt for a postal visa there is an extra £6 postage fee.

What sort of travel insurance will I need?

Travel insurance in a must! It is imperative that the level of insurance covers the cost of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs and trekking up to 6000m. We recommend that you option your travel insurance as soon as possible.

What vaccinations will I need?

Boosters - Please make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / Travel Clinic

Yellow Fever - Although this is no longer required by law, there have been occasions where Tanzanian airport officials have insisted that passengers have proof of inoculation or an exemptioncertificate. It's entirely up to you whether you have the vaccination or exemption, but you MUST have one or the other.

Do I need to take malaria tablets?

Whilst the risk of contracting malaria on your Kilimanjaro climb is very low, Tanzania is a high risk malaria zone. Therefore, you will need to take anti-malarial tablets to ensure you're covered for times when you are at lower altitudes. There are various types you can take, so please visit your GP for more information.

Who should I speak to for travel and health advice?

We recommend seeing your local GP prior to departure. Some GP's may not be able to offer advice on malaria tables or yellow fever, or perhaps don't stock the vaccination. In this case, we recommend visiting your local travel clinic who will be able to assist you. 

Action Challenge have an agreement with MASTA Health clinic and Nomad Travel who are able to offer all challenge participants a discount off any vaccinations given.

I am over 65 and / or have a pre-existing medical condition - what should I do?

When signing up to the challenge, you would have been requested to declare any pre-existing medical conditions which our doctors and team should be aware of. If you are over 65 or have a pre-existing medical condition, we require a signed medical form from your GP so that we know they are happy for you to take on the challenge.

I have developed a medical condition since registering - who should I notify?

If any of your medical information has changed since registering, please email ask@actionchallenge.com and we will be able to update your personal details and we may ask you to have a medical form signed by your GP. Please ensure you notify us no later than 10 weeks prior to departure if possible.

What currency should I use in Tanzania?

The local Tanzanian currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) - there are approx. 2,700 TZS to 1 GBP. However, USD are widely accepted throughout Tanzania and we recommend to use USD for tipping and to buy souvenirs and drinks. 

Am I able to exchange my currency in Tanzania?

While there is an ATM in Kilimanjaro airport, please do not rely on this working so make sure you organise your currency prior to departure.

How much money should I take with me?

We suggest bringing USD $300 - $400 to cover tips for the local team, gifts and purchases off the mountain. Please ensure you bring cash with you as cards are not generally accepted.

How much do you recommend tipping the local team?

Action Challenge is a member of the Porter Protection Scheme under the International Mountain Explorers Connection which adheres to a fair wage and welfare policies for porters, guides and staff. Nonetheless, the ground staff work very hard and any extra payment is greatly appreciated. The amount is down to the individual, but a good guideline is an average of USD$150 from each participant.
