trek Tanzania for NICFC

itinerary

DAY 1

Departure

We take our overnight flight to Tanzania.

DAY 2

Lake Manyara National Park

On arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport, we transfer to our lodge in Lake Manyara National Park. This evening we have an introductory briefing and welcome dinner where we meet the local team and learn more about the challenge ahead.

DAY 3

Nainokanoka - 7 km

This morning we transfer north west to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the 8000 square kilometer UNESCO world heritage site that plays host to the world famous crater of the same name. After a picnic lunch within the National Park we have a safari game drive and then make our way to our camp at the Maasai village of Nainokanoka. We have a warm-up trek this afternoon to stretch the legs and then return to camp

DAY 4

Bulati Village Campsite - 20 km

We depart Nainokanoka camp and commence our trek to Bulati Village. Our trek today passes Maasai Bomas on our way as we cross the Elbulbul depression, a vast grassland with no trees. We should be able to see zebras as they graze, wildebeests and birds of prey. We arrive in Bulati early in the afternoon for rest and refreshments and later we visit a Maasai Boma in the village. Tonight we have dinner and overnight at our campsite.

DAY 5

Empakaai - 16 km

Today we trek 16km to the Empakaai crater rim, across the vast grazing lands of the Maasai livestock, that live side by side with wild African game. Our trek is an incredible opportunity to see African life that on the face of it has been barely touched by modernisation. We climb up to the rim of the Empakaai Crater to reach camp. We descend into the Empakaai Crater, through the forest and to the lake shores, where at the right time of year it is possible to see thousands of pink flamingos attracted by its mineral rich waters. From here we make our way back up to camp where we fall asleep to the sounds of the African night.

DAY 6

Enayobi Village - 18 km

This morning we have a good breakfast at camp and then start on our way along the Empakaai crater rim. As we descend northbound off the crater we make our way to the Maasai village of Enayobi where we stop, have lunch and visit the village. This afternoon we continue downhill through to the beautiful Acacia forests where our camp is waiting for us.

DAY 7

Lake Natron - 16 km

Today is our final day of trekking and we head north through an incredible landscape of valleys and ridges that have been formed by millions of years of soil erosion. This trail leads us past the imposing Oldonyo Lengai Vol-cano which has been quite active in recent years, spewing ash for months at a time. After some 16km we are greeted by the welcome sight of our camp accommodation at Lake Natron.

DAY 8

Arusha - 230 km transfer

After breakfast we start the long transfer from Lake Natron back towards Arusha. We stop for lunch in a tradi-tional village and this afternoon on arrival in to Arusha we have some free time to explore the town. This evening we enjoy our celebration dinner to mark the end of an incredible challenge!
