trek Sri Lanka - Bradford Hospice

itinerary

DAY 1

Departure

We depart the UK for our overnight flight to Colombo.

DAY 2

Habarana

On arrival we transfer to Habarana on a scenic drive that takes us through small villages interspersed with paddy fields, coconut and rubber plantations. We arrive at our hotel this evening where we have a welcome meal and enjoy our first Sri Lankan sunset, relaxing after our long journey.

DAY 3

Elephant Gathering

Our challenge begins with a trek through jungle, passing man-made lakes and into local farmland, with villagers going about their daily life, protecting their plots from wild elephants. We lunch before entering Minneriya National Park, an area of dry evergreen forests and grasslands which is an ideal hideout for elephants during the dry season when only an oasis remains for over 300 thirsty elephants to drink and bathe, which is a truly magical experience.

DAY 4

Sigiriya

Today we trek to the ancient cities through jungle, forest trails, village paths and beside lakes. We head for the world famous rock fortress of Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions which has World Heritage status. With the after-noon to explore this unique complex of water gardens and beautiful frescos we end the day with a climb to the rock summit to watch the surrounding countryside glow as the sun sets.

DAY 5

Dambulla

From Sigariya the best way to explore this wilderness is the 12 km trek through minor forest, across streams and local farmland to the large rocky outcrop at Dambulla. From the top of the rock there are breathtaking view of the sur-rounding plains and back across to Sigiriya Rock in the distance. From Dambulla we make our way to our hotel at Pel-wehera Village where we can relax and recover from our first days challenge.

DAY 6

Kandy

This morning we start our trek from Naula on the edge of the little farming village, with a cup of hot ginger tea and some local sweets made by our guides mother. We see rural Sri Lanka at its best passing local farms, crossing a river and entering a thickly wooded forest, taking us from the low lying dry zone plains, up to the wet central hills. The vege-tation, climate and of course the views will change dramatically as we climb higher, stopping en route at a little village school for a water and fruit break. The final descent is through a forest to a little tea estate village and we end our trek mid afternoon before transferring to Kandy. This evening there is an optional visit of the very important Buddhist tem-ple that holds the tooth of Buddha.

DAY 7

Adam's Peak

Today we leave on a four hour journey to Maskeliya where we check-in to our small guest house at the base of Adam’s Peak. We have free time to relax and an early sleep to prepare ourselves for our toughest challenge yet.

DAY 8

Sri Pada & Colombo

Around midnight we begin the climb of ‘Adams Peak’ 2412m, climbing through the night in order to reach the summit by dawn for a once in a life time sunrise experience. Adam’s Peak could be the most venerated mountain in the world; The Buddhists call it “Sri Pada” (holy foot print), believing that Buddha left his foot print on the summit of the moun-tain. Christians too considered it sacred! Even butterflies make an annual pilgrimage to the mountain giving it the name of ‘Butterfly Mountain’. The sunrise seen from the top of this mountain is considered by some to be one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. We make our way down for a hot breakfast and after a short rest, leave for Colombo where we enjoy some free time until our final gala dinner to celebrate the achievements of the last week.

DAY 9

Colombo

We will have a free morning and this afternoon we transfer back to the airport for our return day flight back to the UK.
