trek Inca Trail for Penarth Hospice

itinerary

DAY 1

Depart UK

Depart UK on our flight to Peru.

DAY 2

Lima

This morning we take an internal flight to the beautiful city of Cusco (3,300m). We have the rest of the day free to relax, followed by a welcome meal and briefing with our guides.

DAY 3

Cusco - 8 km

Today we have an acclimatisation walk above Cusco to the ruins of Saksayhuaman, giving us a good chance to accustom our bodies to the rarified atmosphere. The rest of the day will be free day to explore a little more of this exciting city.

DAY 4

Ollantaytambo - 10 km

Breakfast will be at our hotel before we make our way to the Urubamba River and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We trek today to the Pisac ruins, larger than Machu Picchu and an important settlement for the Incas. After lunch in Yucay, we make our way to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town which is still inhabited, and explore the ruins which tower above it. We stay in this town tonight in preparation for our early start tomorrow.

DAY 5

Inca Trail - 13 km

We start early this morning with breakfast at the hotel and then a train ride to Chilca, where our trekking begins. We trek along the banks of the Urubamba River until we reach the magnificent ruins of Llactapata. Once we arrive in camp the porters will have put up our tents and hot drinks will be served. After enjoying an evening meal, sleep will be early this evening as the effects of altitude and exertion take their toll.

DAY 6

Huayllabamba - Pacasmayo - 16 km

Possibly the hardest day of the trek, we rise early and head to the highest point of the trail - the impressive Warmiwanusca (Dead woman’s pass 4200m), past humming birds and stunted cloud forest and out-standing views down the valley. We then descend into the Pacasmayo valley and camp there.

DAY 7

Pacasmayo - Winay Winay - 21 km

We then climb again, passing the Inca ruins of Runcu Raccay, to the next pass giving us spectacular views of the Vilcabamba range. Walking on well-preserved Inca pathway we pass Sayacmarca ruins with plenty of time for an in depth tour and explanation. We continue along the ridge, passing through tunnels and fantastic views and a slight ascent brings us to Phuyupatamarca ruins. A steep downhill on an old Inca stair case brings us into the Cloud Forest and the outstanding site of Winay-winay. This is another outstanding ruin full of orchids and swallows.

DAY 8

Machu Pichu - 9.5 km

As we have risen early today we should be in time to see early morning sun lighting up the magnificent Machu Picchu ruins from the ‘Inti Punku’ or ‘Door of the sun’. From here it is a short descent to the world’s most famous ruins, where we will have a guided tour. In the afternoon we descend to the town of Aguas Calientes and return by train to Cusco, ready for a celebratory dinner to mark our fantastic achievement.

DAY 9

Depart Cusco

We take a morning flight to Lima and connect with our international flight back home.

DAY 10
