trek Nicaragua for Teenage Cancer Trust

pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this trek?

Generally the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the whole experience of trekking in Nicaragua. The challenge is very achievable with the correct training, and the slow pace set along the trail. The terrain is undulating and there will be some long up and down hill stretches. We will trek up and down volcanoes, and over very varied terrain. It requires a reasonable level of strength, stamina and determination. Your training should incorporate aerobic (endurance building), anaerobic (strength building) exercises and some good long walks, preferably uphill!

is there a pre-challenge briefing?

Yes, a challenge briefing will be held for the group. Though the exact date is yet to be confirmed, it will be roughly three months before your departure.

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa:

British Nationals can visit Nicaragua for up to 3 months without a visa. Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry to Nicaragua. Please note as our flight goes via the United States you will be required to get an ESTA.

Insurance:

Yes - Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs and trekking up to 1,700M. We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible.

Vaccinations:

All participants must seek professional advice regarding required vaccinations for Nicaragua from a travel clinic or GP, providing them with full itinerary details. Please make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / travel clinic.

life on the trek

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what is the weather like while trekking?

You will be trekking at the best time in Nicaragua as November is slightly cooler than average, around 31°C. Please also bring some warm clothes as the temperatures can drop at night.

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food -
All meals are included within the trip cost apart from during free time. You will be provided with 3 Litres of fully purified and treated water a day while trekking. All other drinks at the hotel / restaurant will need to be paid for on an individual basis. This is a real off the beaten track challenge, trekking through areas that see few tourists. In the majority of days the food we eat will be typically Nicaraguan: rich in carbohydrates, with chicken, cassava and beans a regular feature. This is all part of the experience, however we do work hard to provide as varied meals as possible.

Dietary Requirements -
Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation-
Your first and last night will be in a hotel allowing you to get a good night sleep before the challenge ahead — all accommodation is allocated on a twin/triple basis, except for dorm style accommodation in the Eco Lodge. This will be allocated for you unless you have made alternative arrangements. Whilst trekking you will be camping and have access to basic facilities.

Single Supplement -
If you decide that you would like to have your own tent/room on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places at an additional cost of £175 per person. Please contact claire@teenagecancertrust.org
