Trek Mount Etna for MS Positive

Departure UK

On arrival we make our way to our great camp on the slopes of Mt Etna up the coast from Catania. Once settled we prepare our bags for the next trekking days. Tonight as a welcome for the group we are treated to classic Sicilian home-grown food and wines, and meet the team that will be with us throughout the trek and have a full briefing on our challenge.

Mt Etna: “Pista Alta Montana” - 15 km trekking

Our challenge starts early this morning directly from our camp as we have a full day on Etna’s foothills. We trek from Ragabo along the northern trails of the “Pista Alta Montana” or high level route that circumnavigates the volcano to Pirao. Our specialist guide will give us explanations of the phenomena surrounding the volcano. These are good fast walking trails and there are superb contrasts between the early lava flows and the greener paths that we reach towards the end of the day where we exit the national park. After a full day trekking we transfer the short distance to our comfortable hotel and can finally relax with a cool beer or glass of local wine.

Etna Forests - 16 km trekking

This morning after a good rustic breakfast we transfer back to Etna and climb to the forested trails and then make our way through the cooler forests heading west and then directly south skirting the north-western flanks of the volcano. We stop at midday at a refuge where we have lunch and then head down with our backs to the formidable summit of Etna towards the town of Bronte where we end our second day’s challenge. We meet our transfer vehicle that will take us to our accommodation at Etna ‘basecamp’, the traditional starting point for all who climb the summit each day. Tonight we are able to fully relax with great Sicilian food before an early night in preparation of our final climb in the morning.

Summit Crater 3350 m - 13 - 16 km trekking

Now that we have acclimatised and our legs are well prepared, we have a tough day climbing to the trekking summit of Mt Etna, the highest and most active volcano in Europe. We head directly north trekking for 8km on the steep slopes of the mountain. After about 4hrs we will have lunch with superb views over much of the southern part of the island. The weather here is often windy and harsh and we are almost certainly climbing over a pristine layer of snow to Etna’s Refugio Alpino at 2900m. This year Etna has erupted 5 times already and from the safe areas it is an incredible sight. From here it’s a direct steep descent back to our refuge at 2000m. On arrival we take a transfer to our comfortable hotel in the centre of Catania and this evening we have a great celebratory meal to mark the end of an incredible challenge.
