cycle Vietnam - Cambodia for ICT

pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this cycle?

The route which our itinerary follows is relatively flat with the occasional long incline. This is a moderate challenge and very achievable with the correct training. It requires a reasonable level of strength, stamina and determination and the ability to deal with the very warm weather. Your training should incorporate aerobic (endurance building), anaerobic (strength building) exercises and some decent cycles!

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa for Vietnam - UK passport holders do require a visa to enter Vietnam before arrival. A tourist visa is valid for one month from the proposed date of entry. It is ESSENTIAL that you purchase your visa prior to departure from the Vietnamese Embassy in London. The following link will direct you to their website. Here you will find all information on how to obtain your visa and also a downloadable application form: http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/consular.html

Visa for Cambodia - British Passport holders do require a visa to enter Cambodia. These can be purchased at the border but to avoid any unpredictable delays for the group, we strongly advise that you obtain a visa prior to departure. The following link provides detailed information on how to obtain a visa, including a downloadable application form: http://www.mfaic.gov.kh/web/

Insurance – Yes. Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation and trip curtailment costs. We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible.

Vaccinations – No specific vaccinations are required for Vietnam and Cambodia, however, please make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / travel clinic. Advised vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Diptheria and Rabies

what bikes will we be using? / do I need to bring my own bike equipment?

We will be using all terrain mountain bikes for the challenge. You must bring a helmet with you and it is imperative that it is worn at all times. If you wish to bring your own saddle / peddles with you, you may do so. However, standard ones are provided. There will be a water bottle holder on your bike, but you will need to bring a water bottle with you – more details will be provided on your kit list once you have registered.

life on the cycle

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what is the weather like while cycling?

October through to February are the best times to cycle in South East Asia as the conditions are fairly dry and the weather is hot and sunny.

Days will be hot with temperatures reaching up to 30º. As the sun sets the temperature reduces to around 20 - 25º so nights are very warm.

Weather in monsoon regions is always unpredictable and can change very quickly. To ensure that you embrace this as part of the experience, make sure that you are ready for wind, rain, and sunshine!

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - All meals are included within the trip cost apart from during free time and all other drinks at the hotel / restaurant. We will have an unlimited supply of fully purified and treated water, and three varied and nutritious meals a day. Breakfast will be at the accommodation/campsite and will typically consist of porridge, toast and eggs. Lunch and dinner will be en-route at a prearranged restaurant or campsite and will be a variety of rice, pasta, vegetables and a selection of meat and fish.

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation- Comfortable 2/3* hotels. All accommodation is on a twin/triple-share, single-sex basis and we will pair you with someone of a similar age, where possible.

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places.

flights and extending your stay

can I book my own flights?

Yes, this becomes our land only package and reduces your final balance or minimum sponsorship balance - please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights.

You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting hotel on day 2 of your challenge and Action Challenge will require details of your travel arrangements before departure.

Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

can I extend my trip or amend my return flight home?

We offer three different extension packages that you can book onto post challenge. If you are interested in extending your stay then please e-mail Flights@Actionchallenge.com and a request will be made to the airline once we have your specific dates.

Please note that all extensions incur an admin fee and potential air fare increase. Places are limited and all arrangements are subject to availability. We are unable to accommodate extension or deviation requests within 12 weeks of departure, so please request early to avoid disappointment.
