cycle Nepal

pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this cycle?

This cycle has been classed as ‘moderate’ as the majority of our cycling days will be under 40 km, with the longest day being only 80 km. This cycle would therefore suit anyone that was looking to take their cycling hobby to the next level and see the beautiful sights of Nepal.

are there any pre-challenge briefings?

Yes! We have a number of pre-challenge briefings in London spread across the year so there should be a day to suit you. These briefings are a great chance to ask any questions you may have as well as meet other cyclists, the Action Challenge team and our fully qualified cycle guides.

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa - Yes - your Nepalese visa will only be valid for 3 months from the date of issue. An email will be sent out reminding you to apply for your visa within 4 months of your departure date. This will include the application form and the details you need to complete it.

Insurance - Yes - Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs and trekking. We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible.

Vaccinations – It is recommended that you are up to date on boosters as well as having anti-malarial tablets to take whilst in Nepal. Due to the ever changing nature of vaccination requirements please see visit your GP for specific information.

what bikes will we be using? / do I need to bring my own bike equipment?

We will be using all terrain mountain bikes for the challenge. You must bring a helmet with you and it is imperative that it is worn at all times. If you wish to bring your own saddle / peddles with you, you may do so. However, standard ones are provided. There will be a water bottle holder on your bike, but you will need to bring a water bottle with you – more details will be provided on your kit list once you have registered.

life on the cycle

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

what is the weather like while cycle?

In the Terai the altitude is very low and it will be hot during the day, but cool in the nights. As we progress higher into the mid hills it gets cooler, most noticeably at night. The secret to comfort will be layers that you can take off and carry with you as it warms up throughout the day.

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - Breakfast each morning will be in our hotel whilst lunches will be en route. All dinners will be at the hotel or a local restaurant, except in free time. These meals are likely to include local foods such as flat bread and humus, falafel, lentils and various meats and fish.

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation - Four nights in comfortable 2 / 3* hotels along the ride, two nights camping and one night in a traditional Nepalese tea house. All accommodation is on a twin/triple-share, single-sex basis and we will pair you with someone of a similar age, where possible.

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places.

flights and extending your stay

can I book my own flights?

Yes, this becomes our land only package and reduces your final balance or minimum sponsorship balance - please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights.

You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting hotel on day 2 of your challenge and Action Challenge will require details of your travel arrangements before departure.

Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

can I extend my trip or amend my return flight home?

We offer three different extension packages that you can book onto post challenge:

1. Chitwan National Park – explore the steamy jungles of the Terai in this world heritage listed National Park. Your chance to ride on an elephant to explore and seek a glimpse of wildlife such as the one horned rhinoceros, crocodiles, langur monkeys, sloth bear, deer, Asian bison and of course the elusive Bengal tiger.

2. Chitwan National Park - with /without a village homestay where you can learn about traditional Tharu culture and daily life, including learning to cook traditional food, drive an oxcart, traditional art and craft etc

3. Further trekking to any of the incredible treks in the region – for example, you can fly from Pokhara up into the ancient Kingdom of Mustang, a wild and barren landscape and fascinating Tibetan culture in the high altitude desert north of the Annapurna range. You can spend a few days up here or take a longer trek into the “forbidden Kingdom” of Upper Mustang.

4. Sightseeing in and around Kathmandu – day trips or an extended tour seeing all the sights and any special interests you may have

5. Luxury spa break in Pokhara or Kathmandu

6. Yoga retreat in Pokhara or Kathmandu

If you are interested in one of our packages, or just extending your stay out in Peru, a request will be made to the airline once we have your specific dates.
