pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this cycle?

The challenge involves nearly 400 km of riding across small hills and dusty African plains over terrain that has been classified as moderate - tough. For this reason, some prior fitness training is recommended to ensure that you make the most out of the challenge and enjoy the ride!

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa - Yes. Your Kenyan and Tanzanian visas will only be valid for 3 months from the date of issue. An email will be sent out reminding you to apply for your visa within 4 months of your departure date. This will include the application form and the details you need to complete it. Please note that you will be need to apply for a multiple entry visa to Kenya as we will be entering Kenya on two occasions during this challenge.

 

Insurance - Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation and trip curtailment costs. We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible.

 

Vaccinations - MALARIA: Kenya and Tanzania are high risk malaria zones. Therefore, you are advised to take anti-malarial tablets. There are various brands of medication on the market so please seek medical advice from your local travel clinic about taking anti – malarial prophylaxis medication.

 

BOOSTERS: Please make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / travel clinic.

 

YELLOW FEVER: You must have a Yellow Fever Vaccination to enter Tanzania from Kenya. Please speak to your GP or local travel clinic for further advise. Failure to provide a certificate of

what bikes will we be using? / do I need to bring my own bike equipment?

We will be using all terrain mountain bikes for the challenge. You must bring a helmet with you and it is imperative that it is worn at all times. If you wish to bring your own saddle / peddles with you, you may do so. However, standard ones are provided. There will be a water bottle holder on your bike, but you will need to bring a water bottle with you – more details will be provided on your kit list once you have registered.

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

 

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

 

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

 

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food - We will have an unlimited supply of fully purified and treated water, and three varied and nutritious meals a day. Breakfast will be at the accommodation/campsite and will typically consist of eggs, toast, and some local treats. Lunch and dinner will be en-route at a prearranged restaurant or campsite and will be a variety of rice, pasta, vegetables and a selection of meat and fish. We recommend that you bring some of your favourite snacks with you, for that extra energy boost! But please ensure all products are dry and packaged. Cereal bars / sweets / nuts / biscuits / just a few examples.

 

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

 

Accommodation - We will be camping for all nights except our last 2 before departure, where we will be staying in a 3* - 4* hotel. Tents will be provided, but you will be required to bring a 3 season sleeping bag with you. All tents/hotel rooms are on a twin-share basis.

 

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places.

flights and extending your stay

can I book my own flights?

Yes, this becomes our land only package and reduces your minimum sponsorship balance - please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights. You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting point of your challenge. Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

how can I fund this challenge?

Your registration deposit is paid online to secure your place on the challenge. You will fund the remaining balance of the trip cost yourself and you are also committed to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship for Send a Cow. All of your sponsorship will go directly to the charity and will not cover any of your challenge costs.

Before you embark on your challenge, it is essential that we receive your passport, travel insurance, next of kin, medical details and dietary requirements (if applicable). If you have any medical conditions to declare or are over the age of 65, you will be required to complete a medical declaration form, signed and stamped by your GP. If you don’t have all this information to hand, you can still register your place today, and then re-log into the form before you depart by using your email address and the password you create upon registration.
