DAY 1

Departure

DAY 2

Beijing - 2 hour transfer

We land in Beijing and transfer by coach to Badaling Hot Spring Hotel in Yanqing (approx two hours northeast of Beijing). On arrival, we have time to freshen up before lunch and our bike fitting. We have the rest of the day free to relax before enjoying a welcome meal and briefing from our guides.

DAY 3

The Ming Tombs - 58 km

Today we start with a great warm up along flat roads followed by a winding, hilly road that undulates for 20kms. We head towards the valley of Mount Heavenly Longevity, where 13 perfectly preserved Ming tombs contain the remains of emperors, empresses and concubines who were buried between 1409 and 1644. We pass the popular section of the Great Wall at Badaling and continue along the road to Changping where we overnight at our hotel.

DAY 4

Huairou County - 68 km

This morning we cycle from the Ming Tombs heading into the hills to see the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng. This section of the wall stretches for 11km and is connected to Mutianyu Great Wall in the east and Badaling in the west. During the summer, all the buildings are covered in beautiful yellow flowers known as Huanghua, gaving their name to this section of the wall. We continue along winding hilly roads through stunning scenery with the Great Wall snaking its way along the top of the hills creating a spectacular backdrop for our journey. The route climbs again before enjoy a good descent to our lodge on the side of the Mutianyu Great Wall.

DAY 5

Miyun Reservoir - 106 km

This is the longest day of our challenge as we head along a quiet ,hilly road to the northern end of the Yunmengshan Mountains. From the highest point we can see deep into the valley as our route circles the canyon until we arrive at the Black Dragon Pools National Park. From here we start descending to our overnight lodge by the Miyun Reservoir.

DAY 6

The Jinshanling Wild Wall - 66 km

The cycle today starts with a tough morning section on quiet hilly country roads, through local villages, giving us a unique view of typical rural life of northern China. We finish our day’s cycle passing east of the Jinshanling stretch of the Great Wall and arrive into the spectacular Simatai area. This stretch of wall was built 500 years ago during the Ming Dynasty and is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful sections of the Great Wall. We cycle the last 10kms to our lodge at the foot of the wall.

DAY 7

The Great Wall of Huangyaguan - 98 km

The last day of our challenge takes us through breathtaking mountains and valleys. We begin with a 20km downhill followed by 50kms of good, steady uphill taking us up to the pass at just below 700m. The views ahead and back down into the valleys are stunning and, after the previous days of cycling, this uphill shouldn’t be too much of a challenge! From the pass we are rewarded with an exhilarating 20km downhill taking us down into the village of Fuam to our lodge.

DAY 8

The Forbidden City / Beijing

After breakfast we transfer to Beijing to visit Tiananmen Square and the recently restored Forbidden City. This afternoon we transfer to the Old Hutongs where we enjoy lunch in a local home. We later have the opportunity to travel in traditional rickshaws around the myriad tiny streets before transferring to the airport for our return flight this evening.

Arrive UK

We arrive into London in the early afternoon.
