cycle China

pre-trip preparation

how fit do I need to be for this cycle?

The route you will be cycling will involve prolonged climbs, which is why this has been classed as a moderate challenge. This is a very achievable challenge to complete but you will need a reasonable level of strength and stamina as well as being prepared for cycling in very warm weather. Your training should incorporate aerobic and anaerobic exercises as well as ensuring that you get a chance to get some decent cycles in before we leave!

are there any pre-challenge briefings?

Yes! We have a number of pre-challenge briefings in London spread across the year so there should be a day to suit you. These briefings are a great chance to ask any questions you may have as well as meet other cyclists, the Action Challenge team and our fully qualified cycle guides.

do I need a visa / insurance / vaccinations?

Visa - British Nationals do require a visa to enter China. An email will be sent out reminding you to apply visa within 4 months of your departure date. This will include the application form and the details you need to complete it.

Insurance - Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs and trekking up to 2000m. We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible.

Vaccinations – No specific vaccinations are required for China, however, please make sure you are up to date on all necessary boosters and vaccinations by speaking to your local GP / travel clinic. Advised vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid and Diptheria.

what bikes will we be using? / do I need to bring my own bike equipment?

We will be using all terrain mountain bikes for the challenge. You must bring a helmet with you and it is imperative that it is worn at all times. If you wish to bring your own saddle / peddles with you, you may do so. However, standard ones are provided. There will be a water bottle holder on your bike, but you will need to bring a water bottle with you – more details will be provided on your kit list once you have registered.

life on the cycle

how big is the group? / what support will there be?

All of our challenges are group adventures and the average size is approximately 20 participants. We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge cycle guide. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm and sense of humour, and will ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the re-assurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff and satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early local staff will assist you and will arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

what will the food / accommodation be like?

Food and Drink - There will be three varied and nutritious meals a day and a minimum of three litres of bottled water. A typical breakfast consists of a choice of Chinese and Western style food including fruit, toast, cereal and ‘congee’, a traditional Chinese rice porridge. Lunch and dinners usually comprise rice, stir fried and steamed vegetables, dumplings and a selection of meat. Chinese cuisine varies throughout the country and you may find it quite different to Chinese restaurants at home and courses may be served simultaneously. Local beer and wine can be purchased at reasonable prices although Chinese wines tend to be of a distinct flavour and strength. Imported alcohol tends to be expensive.

Dietary Requirements - Please note that we will do our best to accommodate all dietary requirements if informed in advance.

Accommodation – We will be staying in 3* - 4* hotels at the beginning and end of the trek, all with Western amenities - towels are provided. On the trek, we stay in rustic lodges. These are basic but comfortable with Western style bathrooms. All rooms are allocated on a twin-share, single-sex basis with someone of a similar age where possible.

Single Supplement - If you decide that you would like to have your own room on the challenge, we can accommodate this in the majority of places.

flights and extending your stay

can I book my own flights?

Yes, this becomes our land only package and reduces your final balance or minimum sponsorship balance - please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights.

You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting hotel on day 2 of your challenge and Action Challenge will require details of your travel arrangements before departure.

Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

can I extend my trip or amend my return flight home?

We offer three different extension packages that you can book onto post challenge.

3 Day Package to see the Terracotta Warriors.
5 Day Package to see the Terracotta Warriors and the Giant Pandas.
3 Day Package to the exciting bustling city of Shangai.

If you are interested in one of our packages, or just extending your stay out in China, a request will be made to the airline once we have your specific dates.

funding, fundraising & inclusions

how can I fund this challenge?

You can choose to fully fund the challenge yourself, fundraise for a charity of your choice (from which approximately 50% of the sponsorship will cover your trip cost), or opt to do a mixture of both! For all three funding options, an online registration deposit is required to secure your place.

We have worked with over 200 UK charities and welcome partnerships with new ones all the time! As long as they are a registered UK or Irish charity and agree to you doing so, we are more than happy for you to fundraise for any charity close to your heart.
