cycle & trek Malawi - Concern Universal

itinerary

DAY 1

Depart UK

DAY 2

Dedza Project & Cape Maclear

We arrive in Lilongwe and are met by our guides and transfer by coach to our accommodation in Cape McLear. On the way we pass through the town of Dedza where we visit one of the Concern Universal projects to understand at first hand the incredible work that they are doing in the community. We then continue on our way to Cape Maclear where we have some time to prepare our bikes before our welcome dinner and briefing.

DAY 3

Mangochi - 74 km / 6-8 hrs cycling

Cycling these African bikes is no easy task and we start to understand the tough struggle of the people in this country even in the most basic day to day tasks. Our challenge takes us on a mixture of real African mostly flat dirt roads along the southern shores of Lake Malawi to the town Mangochi and to our lakeshore hotel. After a long tough first day cycling we can finally relax in our comfortable hotel.

DAY 4

Liwonde - 105 km / 7-9 hrs cycling

We start early for a stunning ride along the lakeshore road to Liwonde town – 105km. After a hard days cycle we are treated to a little of the wildlife of Africa, we have an afternoon sunset cruise up the river into the National Park to see hippos, crocodiles, elephants and numerous antelope. We spend the night in a lodge on the banks of the Shire river that drains Lake Malawi.

DAY 5

Mulanje - 6 hrs trekking

After breakfast we transfer 3 hours south of Liwonde to Likhubula in the Mulanje mountains where we start our trek. This route is known as the Milk Run and it is a slow but challenging 6hr trek but we ensure that along the way we stop for lunch and a couple of swims. By mid afternoon we should arrive at the Lichenya Hut which is our base for the summit climb tomorrow.

DAY 6

Mulanje - 11 hrs trekking

We start early this morning as the sun rises and have our breakfast on the route to West peak at 2896. It will take 4.5hrs to get to west peak and is a steady uphill with some limited scrambling near the peak. We celebrate getting to the top with the team and then it’s a quick descent should bring us back to our refuge for a mid afternoon.

DAY 7

Concern Universal Project - 4 hrs trekking

This morning we leave the mountain and descend to our pick up point where we meet our vehicles that will take us to our second Concern Universal project. It will be here that we will have a formal handing over of our sturdy African bicycles to the local community, a donation that will without a doubt make a massive change to people’s lives. Once the festivities are over we make our way to our hotel based close to the project and it is here this evening that we are able to celebrate the end of an incredible challenge and the party continues well into the night.

DAY 8
